Special Cover on 160 years of Railways in Eastern India – 10th April 2015.

The first train in India travelled from Bombay to Thane on 16th April, 1853. Historic journey of Railways in Eastern India began with first train travelling from Howrah to Hooghly on 15th August, 1854. Today Eastern Railway has emerged as the backbone of passenger traffic and provides indispensable infrastructural support for the economic development of the nation as a whole. Presently, Eastern Railway carries 33 lakh passengers every day by running 1926 trains daily.

As a part of 60th Rail Week and 160th anniversary celebrations of railways in Eastern India, a Special Cover was released jointly by Ms. Arundhaty Ghosh, Chief Postmaster General, West Bengal Circle and Shri R. K. Gupta, General Manager of Eastern Railways at Kolkata on 10th April 2015 (Special Cover approval no. WB/04/2015).

Philatelic exhibition on Railways was also organised at Victoria Memorial Hall to mark the occasion. It was jointly inaugurated by Shri R. K. Gupta and Ms. Arundhaty Ghosh. Philatelic exhibition was curated by well known philatelist Mohd. Mujibullah of Kolkata and a staff member of Eastern Railway. The exhibition will remain open for public viewing from 10.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. till Thursday, 16th April, 2015.
